It All Depends on How You Look At It

John D. and Jane W. are both seriously in debt and wonder how they will ever become solvent. Although their situations are similar, their experience is not.John feels trapped, hopeless, and fearful while Jane has decided that fear can’t help her and has moved into problem-solving mode. She sees her dilemma as a challenge and feels some excitement about the possibility of finding a creative solution.

Both John and Jane have made internal choices as to how to perceive their situation, and those choices determine the nature and outcome of their total experience. The potential for fear or excitement is not inherent in the situation. The situation is neutral, the response results from the point of view of the person involved in the drama.

If you occupy an uncomfortable positon in any area of your life, ask yourself the following questions

  • Is my discomfort based on fear of what will happen in the future? The future is just a fignment of your imagination and you can imagine whatever you want.
  • Is what I’m projecting as a possible difficult outcome the only possibility? There are always options. Be open to them.
  • If I take my fear out of my thinking, what other possibilities can I imagine? Let you mind roam free, without censoring your thoughts.
  • What untapped resources do I have that can help me solve this problem? (People, talents, opportunities, etc.)
  • Have I suvived difficult situations before? If you are alive, you probably have.
  • Am I willing to believe that I can find a solution now? This is your choice.
  • How can I look at this situation from a new point of view, one that could lead to a possible solution?
