Getting Past the Gloom and Doom

Economic gloom and doom is front and center now, and for good reason. The economy is taking a nose dive. But that doesn’t mean that you have to buy into the group feelings and have the gloom and doom affect your personal finances.

I’m just starting a new business in the midst of the downturn and I assume that the economy is going to work to my advantage. You have the same option.

Because we tend to manifest what we project, when lots of people hold the energy of fear it moves everything downwards. It’s sometimes hard to rise above the group think and get to a place of positive expectation.

The fact is that there are always people who do well and always people who don’t do well. Some people consider a downturn a tragedy, others see it as an opportunity. How do you want to see it? It’s your choice.

Here are some steps I suggest you take:

1. Create a strategy.
If you are in business, then you may have to alter your products, services, or prices to generate more business. You may have to choose a new or expanded target market. The key is to do something, not stay stuck in fear or negative thinking. If your job is shaky, take the steps you need to take to move to a new position. Be proactive. Don’t sit and wait for the shoe to drop.

2. Seek out people who are positive and get inspiration from others.
If the people you hang out with are suffering financially, take the big step and find a new group of people. Watch TV shows that are inspiring, like The Big Idea with Donny Deutch on MSNBC. Every night he talks to people who are flourishing. Download podcasts that have a positive message.

3. Get in touch with the feelings of your financial experience.
During intense times, our feelings are stronger and more noticeable. Instead of wallowing in your fear or pain, face your feelings. Become aware of the kinesthetic experience in your body of how you are reacting to the current situation. Then make the sounds of the feelings you notice. That expresses the feelings and eliminates the need to keep acting them out through your life stories.

4. Watch funny movies or videos. Sing and dance.
Do whatever you have to do to focus on something other than the gloom and doom. Go to www.BoomerAlley.com and watch the videos. That’s my brother Marc’s site. (He was the Executive Producer of Golden Girls and is very funny.)

5. Count your money
The tendency during tough times is to give into financial vagueness. That will paralyze you and keep you from taking action.

6. Network online
I just signed up as an expert on www.SelfGrowth.com, where other experts are gathering. We are finding ways to work together to enhance what each of us does. This creates community and income opportunities. There are lots of sites that allow for networking. Spend a few minutes each day connecting to others.

7. Reach out to others.
Suffering alone and in silence is the worst thing you can do for your finances. Reach out online or to groups like Debtors Anonymous, mastermind groups, church groups, etc. Be involved.

Whatever you do, don’t just sit around complaining. Take positive action.
