The Selling of the Six-Figure Fantasy
I spend a lot of time online and check out a lot of sites just to see what others are doing. I’ll have to admit that I’m getting totally worn out by get-rich-quick overload. Over and over again, I see headlines and sales letters promising that anyone can make six-figures by doing ____. (Fill in the blank). And it will only cost you ______ (Fill in the blank). And it’s guaranteed.
Here’s the headline that pushed me to write this:
“How to Build a Six Figure Business in 33 Days From Scratch”
(I predict that you will soon be seeing the seven-figure come on. Six figrues will be so yesterday)
I have a six-figure business and live comfortably as a result. But it takes more work and business skills than most of the sales pitches would lead you to believe. And even though you might fantasize about hundreds of thousands of dollars magically appearing, if you’ve never dealt with that kind of money, you’d be overwhelmed
Here’s the rub: working all day for six-figures is not what motivates me. My satisfaction and sense of accomplishment requires that life hold more for me than a big pile of dollars (each of which requires care).
There was a piece on CNN last night about Greg Mortenson (Three Cups of Tea), who has devoted his life to building schools as a way of bringing peace to the middle east. His life has meaning and, I’m sure, six-figures because of his devotion to his cause. But six-figures is not his motivation. Serving humanity is.
When you focus on feeding your authentic self instead of focusing on making a lot of money, you are more apt to make more than enough doing something you love.
Instead of asking, “How can I make more money?” ask, “What can I do that would give my life more meaning?”
Then start strategizing about how you can take what you love to do and turn it into a viable business. The good news is that you may not have all of the answers inside of you and you may have to reach out for help. That’s good. You also may have to learn some new skills.
When you use what gives your life meaning as your motivator, you are more likely to get what you want.
My only caveat to you is to be wary of offers that promise to give you all of the secrets to making tons of money online. If you are a person with little ambition, self-confidence, and/or communication skills you may have to clear up some of those internal issues before you step boldly forth into the real world of selling a product or service online (or off line).
