The Courage to Change
Last week as I was conducting the End Underearning teleclass, I realized how very difficult it is for most people to make the internal shifts and take the external actions necessary for permanently altering their financial position.
I can give people all the advice in the world with the most specific proven techniques, but they have to take that final step away from their past into a prosperous future.
I remember clearly, although it was way back in 1984, when an up-and-coming seminar leader who was rooming with a friend of mine invited me to his workshop. I had no idea that Tony Robbins’s workshop included a firewalk.
After a few hours of motivating the audience in his inimitable way, Tony had us all line up and get ready to walk over the coals, despite our fear of “bloody stumps” and other imagined horrors. I can still recall the dialogue in my head as I gradually moved myself to the end of the line and tried to talk myself out of walking over the coals.
There I was, next to last, when suddenly this voice boomed out from inside my being, “Joan, you can do it!” Continue reading
Getting Beyond Not Enough and Into Prosperity
I hear it over and over again, “I don’t have enough money for _____________ (fill in the blank).” The lack may relate to funds for expanding a business, improving one’s wardrobe, fixing one’s house, or perhaps just paying the rent and monthly bills on time.
Many people function at a chronic non-enough level. Although there may be brief periods of healthy cash flow, these are often followed by the familiar state of lack when unexpected expenses seem to appear out of nowhere or income unexpectedly drops.
Interestingly, I hear the not-enough complaint from people at all income levels. I’ve had clients with millions of dollars of net worth who felt they needed more in order to feel successful. It’s not unusual for me to hear the not-enough complaint from people earning six figures a year.
At the same time, I know people who seem to be satisfied no matter what they are earning. I remember reading a story about a school janitor who managed to save enough money from his salary to help fund a college education of a number of students. He perceived his life as abundant and experienced great satisfaction. Continue reading
Say YES to Life!
In the movie Yes Man, Jim Carrey plays the part of an unhappy man who decides to change his life by saying “yes” to whatever comes his way. Although he eventually runs into some problems, accepting opportunities has mostly beneficial effects.
It’s no secret that if you want to improve your financial position or alter the course of your life, you need to behave differently and respond to life in a way you haven’t done in the past. It’s also true that solutions to problems often present themselves as opportunities.
So the question is, are you saying “yes” to opportunities that come your way, or do you find excuses for avoiding the unfamiliar? Do you resist meeting new people, unfamiliar situations, or taking on responsibilities that have uncertain outcomes? Continue reading

What Conscious Prosperity Action Did You Take Today?
Many people I talk to become so focused on “fixing” the internal issues they perceive are blocking their prosperity that they forget to do the real-world tasks necessary for financial health.
Perhaps you are one of the people hoping that if you get your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions in perfect alignment, the money you so ardently crave and hope to manifest will somehow magically appear. Although there is a far-out chance that you will win the lottery or suddenly inherit a large sum of money, more often than not some grounded action is necessary to reach your financial goals.
First of all, if a large sum of money comes your way and you have no financial management skills, then like the proverbial lottery winners who spend everything they gain, your fortune is most likely to dissipate. Money doesn’t take care of itself — it requires constant love and attention, just like people. Continue reading
5 Important Prosperity Principles
1. Making long-term, lasting changes to your financial position takes time plus focused intention. If you are looking for a quick way to alter your financial condition, you will most likely be disappointed. People who move from one teacher to another or one method to another usually make the moves because they had unrealistic expectations of how long it would take to achieve results or what results they could achieve given who they were at that point in time.
2. In order for your finances to change, YOU have to change because your finances are an extension of you. And the changes that you have to make need to take place both internally and externally. If you work on altering your thoughts and emotions, but ignore learning new financial skills, you will have trouble reaching lofty financial goals.
3. No single technique is THE cure for your problems. Techniques such as EFT, BSFF, hypnosis, The One Command, and myriad alternative therapies are useful and can each offer you help, but they must be coupled with real-world actions and changes in the way you deal with life and your finances. Are Your Goals Congruent with Your Persona?
I’m sometimes amazed at how many people tell me that they want to earn $10,000 a month. That’s the figure that I often get in response to my question about how much it would take to make them comfortable.
For a person making $4,000 or $5,000 a month, $10,000 is a big leap. And it’s not only the amount that matters, but what it takes in terms of attitude, effort, and ability in order to net $10,000 a month.
Theoretically, anyone can earn whatever they set their mind to. However, not everyone has the ability and ambition to make it happen.
I have been watching the CBS program Undercover Boss where the CEO of a large company goes undercover and joins a team of workers at the company. It’s not unusual for the CEO to fail at assigned tasks. Last week the CEO of GSI Commerce got fired for his lack of ability. Continue reading
Five Keys to Prospering in the Emerging Economy
The many changes occurring in our economic foundation require a new focus and discipline for you to thrive and prosper. Here are five keys that I consider essential.
- Pay close attention to your finances. During difficult or transitional times knowing exactly where you stand financially and keeping up-to-date financial records are essential for strategizing and making rational financial decisions.
- Stay tuned to financial news. You will benefit from following stories and commentary about the financial sector and becoming more literate about the financial world. This requires knowing much more than just the movement of the stock market, which is a limited view of financial trends. Continue reading
Doing Nothing Is Doing Something
Last week, I posted a tip to my Facebook fan page suggesting that people take a few minutes each day to do nothing. As I’ve thought about this, I realized that if you’re alive, it’s impossible to do nothing. You are always breathing and usually thinking. And doing nothing is actually doing something.
That led my mind to think about how we really do get to choose our moment to moment activities and point of focus. We can choose to be ultra-busy, highly stressed, in fear, or acting compulsively (eating, drinking, shopping, etc.), or the choice can be to pace ourselves carefully, approach everything in a relaxed manner, trust in a positive outcome, or make deliberate choices.
Some people seem to thrive in high stress situations. When I was younger and working for a nightly network television show, I loved the fast pace and daily pressure, but was taking lots of Valium and eating more than my share of sugar and junk foods. In the long run, it proved to be disastrous physically and emotionally. Continue reading
Fear of Being Seen – A Block to Prosperity
In my book Build Your Money Muscles, I identify the five main feelings that people act out through their finances. One of those is a sense of being trapped. When I wrote the book, I didn’t understand the depths of this feeling and it’s nuances. Lately, that understanding is coming into focus. Here’s what I’ve learned.
Children often are discouraged from truely expressing themselves because their parents, and others, just don’t get who they are. I can remember my mother’s reaction when, as a three-year old dressed in my favorite yellow sunsuit, I proudly presented myself as a black bear, having covered myself with mud. I learned then, and in many instances afterwards, that it isn’t always safe to let people now who I am.
Perhaps you can remember moments when you realized that speaking or acting freely could lead to punishment or stimulate negative reactions from those around you. As a result, you developed coping mechanisms that allowed you to fit it or be acceptable.
The result: being trapped in a persona that works in the world, but leaves you feeling disconnected and, perhaps empty. This is often accompanied by less-than feelings, shame, and lots of negative self-talk.
Not the best foundation for drawing in a free-flow of love and support — financial and otherwise.
